My Own Primetime Schedule

DVRs allow you to make your own TV schedule. So do it.

Of course I put four comedies and a drama on Thursdays.

Sunday at 7pm: Touch

NHL games fill the rest of the schedule. Chelsea Lately, The Daily Show, and The Colbert Report fill in for shows in primetime during rerun weeks.

Mid-Season
Dallas takes Mondays at 10.
Shameless takes over for Boardwalk Empire.
Futurama alternates with South Park.
Archer takes over for Key & Peele.
House of Lies is penciled-in to replace 30 Rock.
Portlandia and Workaholics share Tuesdays at 10pm.
After Lately takes the place of Inbetweeners.
Eastbound and Down and Veep share Sundays at 10:30.
Based on NBC's awful new Fall comedies and the track record of mid-season replacements, I assume Community will get the back nine.

For inspiration, try Canada's Fall Schedule and Tim Goodman's recommended shows.

What I Watch: Summer 2012

It's the middle of Summer, the season when basic cable grabs the spotlight and the networks put on terrible reality shows.

Two weeks ago, I started sampling a ton of shows I'd never seen. At this point, I've rejected 70 series, and picked up five: The Eric Andre Show, Project Runway, Franklin & Bash, Workaholics, and John Oliver's New York Stand-Up Show.

My television habits this Summer lean British: Gordon Ramsay, Heidi Klum (oh wait), John Oliver, Alfred Hitchcock, Malcolm McDowell, Ricky Gervais, Russell Brand, Outnumbered, and the couple on Episodes.

Greenblatt Admits NBC Will Suck Next Season

When you lie, you should at least try to make your lies plausible. Granted, NBC's recent history and near-future make that difficult.

"NBC Entertainment chairman" Robert Greenblatt implied at the TCA conference this morning that he doesn't know if the new sitcoms on his Fall schedule are clever or smart.

Variety says he thinks Whitney and Up All Night were steps in the right direction. While that's vague enough, it becomes a lie in the context of smart and clever.

But Greenbo should have some judgment on shows that already have a handful of episodes in the can. It's too late to use weasel words like hope.

Greenblatt has pinned his hopes for these new shows on promotion during The Summer Olympics, going so far as to offer commercial-free debuts of Animal Practice and Go On.

But even if people take a bite of your free samples, they won't come back and buy the product week after week if the sample tastes awful.

Furthermore, "NBC's reality chief" Paul Telegdy insists that two cycles of The Voice this season will not hurt the franchise because they've retooled later rounds to include spinning chairs and whatnot. That misses the point. The point is that after crowning the best amateur singer in December, people won't be as willing to restart the process in January. It weakens the concept. Dancing with the Stars can get away with it because it's more like a game show.

But maybe The Voice wouldn't have had a long lifespan as a galvanizing force anyway, as its ratings this Spring fell behind the CBS comedy machine.

And regarding The Today Show, Greenblatt suggests that it will come back to have a comfortable lead over Good Morning America, but offered no reason for that statement beyond the hope, again, that The Olympics will help.

The Sub-2.0 Club, 2011-2012

Last season's Sub-2.0 Club had a lot fewer members.

New members include The Simpsons, The Biggest Loser, and Bones.

House and Desperate Housewives would also have been included, had they not been canceled.

NBC's Progress

Steve Burke said of the NBC broadcast network, “We’re underperforming our peers….We’re starting to make some progress, but there’s a long way to go.”

Starting to make some progress? The season average for NBC's best hope, "The Voice" just fell below "American Idol" despite its massive post-Super Bowl numbers, and "Idol"'s massive 30% decline since last season.

How do NBC's ratings for the first week of May sweeps fare when compared to the first week of last year's May sweeps?

RATINGS DIFFERENCE, YEAR-TO-YEAR
The Office -50% (Carrell's farewell)
The Voice -39%
Dateline Sunday -36%
Celebrity Apprentice -35%
Parks & Recreation -30%
Law & Order: SVU -29%
The Biggest Loser -19%
30 Rock -16%
Dateline Friday -8%
The Today Show (falling into 2nd place)
Community (even)
NHL (up)
NEW SERIES ABOVE NBC'S 1.6 AVERAGE LAST WEEK
Smash (1.8 on Monday)

source: spotted ratings

There's only one conclusion. Steve Burke is talking about hockey. HOCKEY IS NOW NBC'S BEST HOPE.

The CBS Sitcom Shuffle

I've been playing CBS network programmer on twitter (!?).

CBS has many good (rated) sitcoms and not enough good dramas. Comedies are hot, dramas are not.

It's pretty much a given that CBS will expand their comedy portfolio by an hour next season. Thursday at 9pm would be the most logical place to build

With the prospect of facing "The Voice" and "Dancing with the Stars" on Mondays this Fall, CBS should keep its Monday sitcom line-up as strong as possible.

Monday's weak link, "Mike & Molly" has had the benefit of a "Two and a Half Men" lead-in for two seasons. It's time for those two birds to leave the nest.

But recognize that the weak link faced the strongest half hours of "Dancing" and "The Voice."

Thursday at 8pm without "The Big Bang Theory" becomes a weak time slot. The top dog in the hour in the Fall, "The X Factor," doesn't hurt CBS the way it hurts ABC & NBC, and is the main reason ABC & NBC can't capitalize on this vacuum.

CBS is known for its stability. Keeping 3/4 of the Monday lineup intact, and "Rules of Engagement" on Thursdays at 8:30 will provide that stability.

Fueling speculation (from me, at least) about the "Mike & Molly" pairing with "Rules of Engagement" is their rerun paring on April 20 at 8-9pm, as well as their scheduled rerun pairing on Wednesday, May 16, at 8-9pm.

CBS Sitcoms on Monday
8pm How I Met Your Mother
8:30 2 Broke Girls
9pm Two and a Half Men
9:30 new sitcom

CBS Sitcoms on Thursday
8pm Mike & Molly
8:30 Rules of Engagement
9pm The Big Bang Theory
9:30 new sitcom

But what do I know? I've never seen a full episode of any of these shows.

This Is What NBC Was Promoting

With NBC currently flat-lining every day that doesn't begin with "Mon," maybe it's true that NBC has been successfully using sports as a promotional platform.

Let's look back at the new series NBC was promoting during the last Summer Olympics, in Beijing in 2008.

America's Toughest Jobs
Crusoe
Kath & Kim
Knight Rider
My Own Worst Enemy

A missed opportunity.

How about the new shows for Fall 2009 that were promoted week after week during Sunday Night Football?

Community
The Jay Leno Show
Mercy
Trauma

One fan favorite that continues to hang on by its fingernails.

What about new Spring series promoted during the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics?

The Marriage Ref
Parenthood
Who Do You Think You Are?

Two of them are still around, but by no means are they hits.

Fall 2010?

Chase
The Event
Law & Order: Los Angeles
Outlaw
Outsourced
Undercovers

That is embarrassing.

Fall 2011?

Free Agents
Grimm
The Playboy Club
Prime Suspect
Up All Night
Whitney

Ouch.

But Fall 2012 is going to be different!

How Bad Have the Ratings Been?

In April's first 12 days, more than 20 series have set or tied series lows, and some of these lows are milestones.

The Office finally beat its previous series low of 2.3 set seven years ago.
CSI: Miami went out out on a new low.
Heading down its final stretch, House fell below 2.0 for the first time. On the same night, Bones tied a series low set in 2009.
American Idol fell below 4.0 for the first time.
NBC's savior The Voice dropped to new lows, and its top drama, Smash, has yet to bottom out.
2.5 Men tied its series low of 3.6, first set five years ago (but also tied this February).

This follows a normally-bad-but-not-this-bad February and March, when The CW posted lows across the schedule, and The Simpsons bottomed out at 2.0.

Six weeks remain in the season. It may get worse.

How Low Is NBC's Bar?

Whelp, NBC has proven that it can do worse than 1.4.

FOX 2012-13

Spot went though FOX's line-up today and pondered its shows' prospects in an even-handed and level-headed manner.

Well, I'm a fool and about to rush in.

Sunday
Cartoons. Only FOX knows if "Napoleon Dynamite" passed its test. If it has, I'd pare it down to 11-minute episodes and put it on the new Saturday night cartoon block.

Saturday
"COPS" has been pre-empted this season by baseball, MMA fights, "America's Most Wanted" specials, and "Q'Viva." Send it to Friday and let reruns fill the gaps between specials.

Friday
"COPS" at 8pm, "Kitchen Nightmares" at 9pm. Done.

Thursday
"X Factor" / "American Idol" at 8pm, new drama at 9pm.

Wednesday
"X Factor" / "American Idol" at 8pm, "Glee" at 9pm.

Tuesday
"Raising Hope" at 8pm, "New Girl" at 9pm, new sitcoms in between.

Monday
"Bones" at 8pm, new drama at 9pm. "Touch" takes over at 9pm in the Spring.

Tally
2 new dramas and 2 new sitcoms in the Fall.
2 new sitcoms and 1 new drama as backup in the Spring.
More specials and more cartoons on Saturdays.
That's certainly in line with FOX's recent programming decisions and its already-announced plans.

NBC Thursday Sitcoms Average 1.7

One year ago, "The Office" was at 3.3. But that's an unfair comparison because people like Steve Carrell.

NBC's Wednesday sitcoms "Whitney" and "Chelsea" averaged 1.55 this week.

Monday the 13th

The days are getting longer and the ratings are falling further.

I watched the Sharks vs Capitals.
