Face the Nation has been perma-expanded to an hour, although affiliates can still opt to not carry the second half hour. 2/3 of CBS affiliates have chosen to take the extra half hour during the current 20-week trial that began in April. Local NFL pregame shows for Sunday's early games tend to start an hour before the national CBS pregame show and will preempt the second half hour in many big markets this Fall.

Programming Notes

Bravo renewed Kathy, the weekly talk show hosted by Kathy Griffin, and penciled it in for January.

To capitalize on Sherman Hemsley's death, three channels will do mini-marathons. TV Land will air "The Jeffersons" on Saturday, from noon to 4pm. AntennaTV will air Jefferson episodes of "All in the Family" on Sunday, from 9pm to midnight. TV One will air "The Jeffersons" on Tuesday, from 7am to 5pm.

Regional cable channel Ohio News Network will sign off on August 31. It started up in 1997.

GMA Catches Up to Today

Good Morning America and The Today Show tied in the demo last week, the first time GMA has been at the top in 17 years, and increased its lead in total viewers.

Meanwhile, Norah O'Donnell will replace Erica Hill on CBS This Morning in the Fall.

Today began broadcasting from the London Olympics on Monday, and is expected to win the next three weeks, which will lengthen its reign at #1 in the demo to at least 902 consecutive weeks. It has been "television’s longest winning streak ever."

But after the Olympics, ABC may be running away with the morning show torch.

Fall Premiere Dates, 2012

FOX and NBC got a jump on the competition by premiering early. CBS and ABC will largely premiere on the first week of the the new television season, September 24 - 30. The CW will wait until the dust settles and premiere in October.

NBC used the Olympics to launch Go On on August 8 and Animal Practice on August 12. Guys with Kids launched at 10pm after America's Got Talent on September 12. The pilots of Revolution, Ben & Kate, The Mindy Project, Last Resort, and Emily Owens, M.D. were released online before their debuts on TV.

ABC gave Suburgatory the plum post-Modern Family slot.

What I Watch: Summer 2012

It's the middle of Summer, the season when basic cable grabs the spotlight and the networks put on terrible reality shows.

Two weeks ago, I started sampling a ton of shows I'd never seen. At this point, I've rejected 70 series, and picked up five: The Eric Andre Show, Project Runway, Franklin & Bash, Workaholics, and John Oliver's New York Stand-Up Show.

My television habits this Summer lean British: Gordon Ramsay, Heidi Klum (oh wait), John Oliver, Alfred Hitchcock, Malcolm McDowell, Ricky Gervais, Russell Brand, Outnumbered, and the couple on Episodes.
