1953-54

ABC was saved from bankruptcy by merging with United Paramount Theaters, which provided $30 million for bigger projects. DuMont bought NFL rights for $1.3 million and began airing NBA games in December. ABC begins a newscast in September. NBC broadcasts the first newscast in color on February 16, 1954.

In the Spring of 1954, The U.S. Supreme Court affirmed that game shows which award prizes, or "give-away programs," are not a form of gambling, as contestants do not risk their own money.
